Diabetes is a lifelong disease characterized by high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. The food we eat is broken down by our body into glucose and enters our bloodstream. Glucose is the driving fuel that gives us the energy required to get on with our daily activities. But, for it to be able to do that, glucose needs to deposited from our blood into our cells. Our pancreas produce a hormone called insulin, which is responsible for collecting the glucose from our blood, and depositing it into our cells. If the pancreas do not produce sufficient insulin, or if the produced insulin is not used by the body effectively, the glucose remains in the blood and continues to accumulate, resulting in diabetes.

There are mainly two types of diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, pancreas do not produce insulin at all. This type of diabetes occurs in children and young adults, and accounts for only 5% of all diabetic cases. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include excessive thirst and urination, constant hunger, unexplainable weight loss and extreme fatigue.

If the pancreas do produce insulin but not in sufficient quantities, or if the produced insulin is not used effectively by the body, it is referred to as Type 2 diabetes. This is also called insulin resistance. This is a much more common form of diabetes, and is usually associated with old age, obesity, physical inactivity or family history. Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include all the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, blurred vision, tingling or numbness in hands and feet, slow healing of wounds and cuts are also reported as symptoms for Type 2 diabetes. Sometimes Type 2 diabetes may not exhibit any external symptoms.

Diabetes is usually diagnosed by blood tests called fasting blood glucose test, oral glucose tolerance test and random blood glucose test. Since there is no cure to diabetes, treatment is lifelong and includes supplementing the body with insulin in the form of either tablets or injections. By following active lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and eating healthy food, onset of Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented.

Diabetes can be simply divided into two types, type 1 and type 2. Even though the basic reason behind the occurrence of diabetes is the same, that is the body not producing enough insulin, the causes behind each one are different. Type 1 diabetes is the more complicated of the two and the most difficult to deal with. This is because the cause of type 1 is not fully understood. One of the theories floating around is that there is a mysterious virus which attacks the pancreas. The pancreas is the organ responsible for insulin production.

Another theory is that it is a genetic disorder. Whatever the reason is, it is very difficult to prevent type 1 diabetes from occurring. However, this is not at all the case with type 2 diabetes. This type can actually be prevented. The main reason why people get type 2 is because of unhealthy life style. Therefore changing one’s lifestyle is the easiest way to prevent type 2 diabetes. So what is meant by healthy life style? To start with, regular exercise and proper diet is key to preventing type 2 diabetes. By exercise it is meant by doing at least 25 to 30 minutes of moderate intensity workouts every day. The idea is to lose at least seven percent of one’s body weight. Overweight people are at higher risk to get type 2. Symptoms for both types are similar. They include constant thirst and hunger, frequent urination, sudden decrease in weight without dieting or exercise.

The medicine still does not have all the answers when it comes to causes of diabetes. Why someone does and the other does not get diabetes is not entirely clear. Anyone who has a parent with diabetes it is more likely to develop diabetes. Factors that could affect about getting diabetes are related to nutrition and exercise or a viral infection at a young age, the immune system gets out of balance.

Living with diabetes
People who have diabetes, have much to handle. It is a disease that will never go away(except possibly for gestational diabetes). From moment when it is diagnosed it will take an important place in your life. Short term symptoms need to be discovered, such as a too high or low sugar. But there may be complications in the long term. The blood sugar levels should be kept as stable as possible and healthy living is necessary to make the less chance of complications. Complications that may occur can include dealing with kidney problems, eye problems and problems with foot.

Dietary management of diabetes
Previously, people with diabetes were put on a strict diet. Today, this is fortunately no longer practice. The diet should be healthy and that goes for anyone, diabetic or not. Things to look for:

Regularly eat the meals served more times a day. Skipping meals is not good. Some diabetic patients will still have need to eat between meals.

Adequate dietary fiber food. This includes vegetables, fruits, legumes, brown bread, raw vegetables.

Limit intake of sugar, fat and salt. Coffee or tea without sugar, but with sweeteners.

Do not drink much alcohol. Alcohol lowers blood sugar. Also obesity and elevated cholesterol are also reasons not to drink alcohol.

Eat moderate amounts.

Lifestyle advice for diabetes

Watch your weight, make sure you have a safe weight persists.

Move sufficient daily, it’s good to at least half hour each day to move so that what your heart and lungs work harder.

Do not start smoking or stop smoking ie you already do.

Keep the blood sugar as stable as possible, measure your blood sugar level regularly.

If you have diabetes it is advisable to check your feet daily. The flow of the arteries is often less and wounds can quickly lead to inflammation.

Have yourself checked regularly by the GP or internist.

In diabetes, the risk of high cholesterol and high blood pressure is present. This must be checked regularly and if necessary the GP will prescribe medication.

Make sure to check your eyes regularly.

The physical and the mental need to work together in a more symbiotic manner, in fact. So, what is health? Health is a level of existence whereupon there is a good balance of pertinent factors. It is a standard for which one is wise to achieve.

But, good mental health does not just happen, not on the norm. On the norm, it must be cultivated, worked on, acknowledged and then maintained. When we are well, then we are healthy. This means that the five critical areas in our lives must be in balance. Those five items as described Myers, Sweeney and Witmer are spirituality, work, leisure, friendships and self-direction. This is their interpretation of a functioning wellness model. It is appealing based solely on the logic alone. It just makes sense.

So, what does one need to do to get better mentally? Do you need counseling or psychotherapy? Most of us do, even those of us who have done it, often need to maintain it, particularly when we become ensconced in an unhealthy relationship.

Relationships, for example fit together like puzzle pieces. When one party becomes mentally healthy, it necessarily affects the other party as the healthy piece will outgrow the other piece or the other one will grow too. This is an optimal expectation. Things may not occur in that manner, unfortunately.

Because good mental health is a job that one should strive to do.

Indian culture seemed to show that mental illness had to do with witchcraft. Charaka Samhita is what it was known as. In ancient Chinese culture mental disorders were treated with tradional chinese medicine. The Hebrews and Israelites had the belief that mental illness was caused by a problem between the person and God. Greeks and the Romans beleived that mental illnesses were caused by the four humours of your body were unbalanced.

The middle ages brought us more mental illnesses. Persia, Arabia and also the Muslim Empire where it was thought that mental illness was from a person being astray, or totally lost as in a spiritual. Islam beleived that these people that suffered mental illness were deserving to be treated humanely. Here they opened the first psychiatric hospital in Baghdad in the year 705. Christian Europe beleived that mental illness had to do with sin.

In the 16th thru 18th centuries it is beleived that many people with mental illnesses were mistaken as witches and hunted. Many of these that were considered insane were taken to workhouses, poorhouses and jail.

In the 19th century insane asylums were spreading.

Now into the 20th century it has become a movement to treat people with mental disorders outside of hospitals with medications and treatments.

In the 21st century there is a huge movement rethinking what mental illness is and how to treat it.

Life is full of peaks and valleys. Depression comes in different forms. We will not discuss the severe forms of depression, but the mild form, like how you feel on the “it-has-no-point” and “I-would-stay-in-bed-lying” day. Because for these phases there are simple tips and tricks that can help you out.
Tip 1: Do not take yourself too seriously
Benjamin Franklin said: “The only two things you can not walk away from in life – death and taxes”. In addition, he forgot one thing: “grief”. Sadness also no one can escape. Everyone becomes sad in his life. Sometimes you can be sad and depressed about things that are really not that bad. Do not be sad. Self-pity gets you nowhere. Keep in mind that even this difficult time will pass.
Tip 2: Go do something
Do not stay home on the sofa sitting lost in thought. This way you will stay in that circle going around. Go do something! What you will do is not so important as you become active. Go hiking in the woods, grab your bike and go to the market or go on visit to an old friend. Evrything is better than staying at home in front of the TV.

Tip 3: Where you can experience fun?
If you’re depressed, you often do not feel like doing anything. Probably reading the tip 2 you think “phew, I have no desire!” or “Tip 3 What?”. Well, this tip is just for you!
Write a list of activities you normally enjoyed doing. Okay, you feel like nothing fun to do. However, if you list your fun things to do, you just select one of them and go do it. You’ll see, you will after a while secretly really have fun.
Tip 4: Talk about it
Open your heart to someone you trust. It’s not about tips that you should ask the person you’re talking to, or asking for his or her opinion, it is just that you can tell your story. You will see that this is very liberating.
Tip 5: Dare to cry
If you feel the tears coming, then let them run wild. Do not be ashamed of your tears. Crying is good, especially if you know why you cry.
Tip 6: Analyze your situation
Sit down and think calmly about why do you feel so bad. If you know the cause you are one step closer to solution.
Tip 7: Learn to give
As a child you have probably already formed an ideal picture of how your life would become. In later life, you have certain goals set for yourself and you have dreams where you want to be or go. Unfortunately, not all feasible. You must learn to accept that.
If you keep trying to reach unrealistic goals on short or long term you will get depressed. Because they will not. If something is not working, say to yourself: “I did my best, but it is not working”. Here you do not feel bad conscience or failure of it. Every person has a limit.
Tip 8: Work out
Numerous studies have shown that exercise can help combat depression. Anyway if you exercise regularly, do not hesitate to live a lot of time! Exercise is a great way to stop mental turmoil.
Tip 9: Go Painting
Fight your bad mood into the art. Establish how you feel. It does not have to be beautiful or perfect. Try show your feelings in colors and shapes. Using colors for certain feelings such as: red for anger, black for sorrow, gray for anxiety, etc. You’ll be amazed what you can.
Tip 10: Relax
Today everyone is rushed, everything must be done quickly and accurately. This often leads to stress. Frequently follows a prolonged stress depression. Try to break the circle of stress and fatigue by taking time for yourself. Take a day off, sleep late, take a soothing bath, read a good book and be especially selfish for once! Do what YOU want, not what someone else wants you to do.
Tip 11: Wait
Wait to make important decisions. If you’re not feeling well you are not ready to decide anything. Your emotions can quickly take over if you have something to decide.
Tip 13: Do not buy
Do not go shopping to feel better. Even if you feel better just by a new purchase, when you get to the end of the month your account will look at laugh at you again soon perish.
Tip 14: Leave the refrigerator close
Often people begin to eat when they feel depressed. This displays a full and happy feeling, but once the pounds will arrive a sense of regret and maybe even a new creep depression. Prevention is better than cure. If you find you want to eat, go check out a walking tour. Far from the refrigerator.
Tip 15: Eat Healthy
Nutrition sends more than you think. A healthy body is the basis for a healthy mind. You have especially B vitamins and various amino acids.

Millions of people in our society suffer from some sort of mental illness and are living quality and productive lives. Many of these people have to take medication daily and or participate in therapy in order to keep their mental illness at bay. Mental illness comes in many different forms and each form has different levels of the disease. Its when those that refuse to seek help or have sought help but refuse to take their medication and or participate in therapy that the quality of live starts to decline.

There are many forms and levels of mental illness, from mild to severe. Someone with a severe form of mental illness probably cannot live by themselves or hold down a job. One common mental illness is depression. Just about everyone has had a bout of depression, short term and then they are ok. The long term depression is of more concern and will require some antidepressant medication and or therapy. People with ongoing depression do live quality lives within the family and work field. It is when they do not take required medications and or seek some sort of therapy their lives can decline quite rapidly.

Common types of mental illness are anxiety disorders such as panic attack. Some experience very mild attacks that will come and go while others may be prisoners in their homes due to panic setting in with the thought of leaving their secure surroundings. Eating disorders such as anorexia, mood disorders such as bipolar, personality disorders, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, adjustment disorders, tic disorders, sleeping disorders, dementia, and alzheimers’s are the more common.

No matter what mental illness diagnosis the doctor has given the perosn, they must take their medication daily as prescribed and or seek therapy intervention, otherwise they will not be able to live productive lives within their homes and out in the work force. It is difficult for others to recognize that one has a mental illness unless they are not taking prescribed medication then signs and symptoms may be quite visible to other people. There is life with mental illness.

Take a walk on any given college campus and take note of the passersby; four in ten of these students, according to the Associated Press, experience frequent stress. One in five of the same students, if asked, would say they feel stressed every single day. College stresses students even during the normal routine of classes and homework. When college exams are on the horizon, students can head for total burnout if they don’t properly prepare themselves. Skip the all-nighters, put aside the mugs of coffee and pay attention to your body’s needs long before you feel you are about to pass out from exhaustion.

1. Study in Advance
Not only does cramming shortly before an exam exhaust you both mentally and physically, it’s simply not as effective as studying in short spurts for weeks ahead of time. After each class, spend five minutes looking over your notes. When the weekend rolls around, spend ten to twenty minutes a day reviewing what you’ve learned so far in the class. When it’s time for exams, this long-term, small-dose approach to studying will serve you well. You’ll need only to spend about half an hour a day reviewing everything the last few days before the exam.
2. Eat Well
Your body, and more importantly, your brain, requires adequate nutrition during mentally exhausting activities such as exams. Skip the energy drinks and jolts of caffeine. Don’t overdo the sugary treats. Instead, eat three well-balanced meals each day and enjoy healthy snacks such as vegetables, yogurt and granola between meals. Supplement your diet with vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts that have a positive Braineffect. Healthy brain vitamins and minerals include:
Omega-3
Magnesium
B vitamins
Iron
Zinc
3. Sleep Well
Staying up all night in the days before an exam can backfire on you. The brain effect of lack of sleep is a sharp drop in your ability to focus. You’ll forget much of what you studied, especially if you crammed. You can even be more susceptible to catching an illness or falling asleep during class and missing the exam entirely. Get a healthy six to eight hours of sleep each night, especially as the exam week approaches.
4. Exercise
Although you may feel pressed for time with exams approaching, pencil in time for exercise. A trip to the gym, a walk around campus or a dip in the pool can give you the energy you need to prepare for exams. Make time for daily physical exercise and you’ll be more productive in the rest of your day’s activities.
5. Take a Day Off
Prepare adequately ahead of time and you can rest the day before exam weeks starts. Refresh yourself with a trip to the movies, a sports game or a shopping excursion. Taking time for your own enjoyment will help you feel less overwhelmed by the week ahead. If you’ve been studying, sleeping well, eating well and exercising in preparation, you can afford the time away from the stress of exams.
Whether this is your first semester as a freshman or your last semester in grad school, these 5 tips can really change how you handle the stress of college test-taking. With the right approach, you’ll be on the Dean’s List in no time.

When it comes to life saving techniques, many people may believe that one needs to go through extensive and expensive course to be prepared and properly licensed to provide care. This is certainly the case when it comes to advanced techniques and certifications, but it is extremely simple for anyone to learn how to perform CPR.

In the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of businesses and locations that have an AED on site. These devices are simple to use and can help in saving someone’s life. The problem is that these devices are not located everywhere. Being trained in CPR is the best thing to do.

CPR courses have changed over the years and are constantly evolving. That is why it is important to learn this skill and stay current. One never knows when danger can strike. Be a hero since being proficient in CPR can save a life.

One of the main problems with CPR courses would be that they are not always easy to attend. Depending on the location, there may or may not be courses that are close by. Depending on the provider, the course can also be quite costly. Some organizations will offset the price and rates can vary greatly from one provider to the next.

An easy solution to this would be to learn CPR online. This has a number of great advantages. The first would be that the training can be done in the comfort of one’s home. This means that a person does not have to leave the house and the training can be done at a time that is convenient for the individual. All that is needed would be a computer with a reliable internet connection. Additionally, the online courses are usually less expensive than ones done in person.

Learning CPR is an important thing that everyone should consider. Doing this online is an economical and easy way to learn this important skill.
