Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District

The Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District is located about sixty miles east of San Diego and has a population of roughly 5,000. The District was established in 1982 when the communities of Julian and Cuyamaca consolidated their resources to form one district providing fire and life safety protection across San Diego’s backcountry. The district covers over 85 square miles of various terrains and climates, as well as the several smaller communities that make up the greater Julian area. The community is protected by two stations in strategic locations to best serve our mountain community. The district is governed by a board of directors comprised of 5 qualified members of the community with experience in the fire service and/or public service and education.

The district’s current ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating is a 5 within a five mile radius of Station 71, it is an 8 anywhere within the Water District (JCSD), and a 9 everywhere else in the District.

The ISO rates each fire department based on level of protection on a scale of 1 through 10, 1 being the highest level of protection, 10 being unprotected. The ISO makes an independent evaluation of many fire departments every ten years or when major changes have been made.

Text Box: The Julian Service Area

The Julian Service Area (JSA) is a San Diego County contract to provide Advanced Life Support to San Diego Counties backcountry. The contract has been awarded to the JCFPD for the last 7 years. The contract was re-awarded to Julian Cuyamaca Fire in 2004 for the next 5 years with a 2 year extension if  desired. Not only does the JSA include the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District but it also includes the Intermountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, and the Shelter Valley Volunteer Fire Department. This makes the JSA the largest service area in San Diego County. The JCFPD also mutual aids with Mt. Laguna Fire Department, Warner Springs Fire Department, Sunshine Summit Fire Department, Montezuma Valley Fire Department, San Diego Rural Fire Department, Borrego Springs Fire Department, Ramona Fire Department, and Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department when requested.

The JSA is protected by one ALS ambulance during the week, 24 hours a day. On the weekends, the JSA is serviced by two ALS ambulances both stationed out of Station 71. Both ambulances are staffed by full-time and part-time employees of the District.
